The novel follows Jack Duluoz, Kerouac’s alter ego, during a deeply personal and spiritual journey. It begins with his time as a fire lookout on Desolation Peak in Washington State, where he lives in total isolation, seeking peace, reflection, and spiritual insight.
After this period of solitude, he returns to society and travels across the United States and Mexico. He reconnects with friends from the Beat Generation and becomes involved in a restless lifestyle filled with travel, writing, parties, and constant movement.
Throughout the book, Duluoz struggles between two opposing desires: the need for spiritual isolation and the attraction of social life and freedom. This tension leads to growing disillusionment and self-questioning.
