The story follows Jahan, a young boy who arrives in 16th-century Istanbul with a white elephant named Chota. He becomes an elephant keeper in the Ottoman palace and later the apprentice of the famous imperial architect Mimar Sinan.
As Jahan learns architecture, he grows up surrounded by the beauty and political complexity of the Ottoman Empire. He experiences love, friendship, betrayal, and struggles to find his place in life.
His relationship with Chota remains very important throughout the story. The novel shows his journey from a foreign outsider to someone involved in the creation of great imperial buildings.
