Two interwoven narratives explore faith, displacement and identity. In London, Maja, a young Afro-Cuban singer expecting her first child, struggles to reconcile her family's Cuban heritage, her mother's devotion to Santeria, and her own sense of belonging. In a parallel, mythic strand, Yemaya, a Santeria spirit, inhabits a "somewherehouse" with doors opening onto London and Lagos, unsettled by how easily the old gods hide behind the masks of Catholic saints. Oyeyemi's lyrical second novel weaves the two stories into a meditation on migration and inherited memory.
