Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut follows Dwayne Hoover, a successful car dealer whose mental health is rapidly deteriorating, and Kilgore Trout, an obscure science-fiction writer. Their lives intersect at an arts festival, where Hoover reads one of Trout’s stories and becomes convinced that he is the only person with free will while everyone else is merely a machine.
