Chichikov, a former civil servant, travels across rural Russia buying the names of dead serfs who are still officially registered as alive. He plans to use them to gain wealth and social status. Through his encounters with greedy and foolish landowners, Gogol satirizes Russian society, exposing its corruption, bureaucracy, and moral emptiness.
