The story is about Wenzel Strapinski, a poor tailor who travels to the town of Goldach looking for work. Because of his elegant clothing, the townspeople mistake him for a nobleman. He becomes trapped in this misunderstanding and must decide whether to reveal the truth or continue the deception.
The situation becomes even more complicated when he falls in love with Nettchen, a wealthy young woman. The story explores themes of appearance vs. reality, social status, and identity.
