Midnight’s Children follows Saleem Sinai, born at the exact moment of India’s independence in 1947. His life becomes mysteriously linked to the history of the country. He discovers he has telepathic powers that connect him to other children born at the same time, each with special abilities.
As India goes through political upheavals, wars, and the Emergency period, Saleem’s personal life also becomes chaotic and fragmented. The “midnight’s children” symbolize the diversity and divisions of modern India, but they fail to stay united.
The novel blends magical realism and historical fiction to show how individual destiny and national history are deeply connected.
