Aubrey, an 11-year-old girl, loses her father and younger sister in a tragic accident. Soon after, her mother is unable to cope with the grief and leaves, leaving Aubrey completely alone. To survive, Aubrey hides the truth and continues living in her house as if everything is normal.
She copes with her loneliness by writing letters to her deceased sister and to an imaginary friend. Over time, her grandmother discovers what has happened and brings Aubrey to live with her in Vermont.
Gradually, Aubrey begins to heal in her new home. With support and care, she slowly opens up about her feelings and starts rebuilding her life after her deep loss.
