The novel follows Milkman Dead, a young man from a wealthy but emotionally broken family in Michigan. Feeling disconnected and aimless, he embarks on a search for hidden gold linked to his aunt Pilate.
His journey takes him to the American South, where he uncovers his family’s history and the legend of an ancestor named Solomon, who is said to have “flown back” to Africa, symbolizing escape from slavery.
Through this discovery, Milkman gains a deeper understanding of identity, heritage, and responsibility. He gradually transforms from a selfish man into someone more aware of his roots and the lives of others.
