Ailey Pearl Garfield, a young Black woman, struggles with identity and belonging in America, shaped by what W.E.B. Du Bois called “double consciousness.” As she grows up, she is haunted by family expectations and the voices of her mother, sister, and female ancestors who push her to succeed. Seeking answers, she traces her family history across generations in the American South, uncovering a complex legacy of Indigenous, Black, and white ancestry marked by slavery, resistance, hardship, and survival. Through this journey, she gradually comes to understand and embrace her full heritage and identity.
