The novel tells the story of Kostas and Defne, a young couple from Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities who fall in love during the conflict in Cyprus in the 1970s. Forced apart by war and social divisions, they lose contact and rebuild separate lives in exile.
Years later, their daughter Ada, living in London, struggles with grief, identity, and the hidden history of her parents. The story is partly narrated by a fig tree, which witnesses the family’s love, trauma, and separation across decades.
At its heart, it is a story about love, loss, migration, and the long-lasting impact of war on families.
