The Reluctant Fundamentalist tells the story of Changez, a highly educated Pakistani man who studies at Princeton and builds a successful career in a prestigious financial firm in New York. He appears to be fully integrated into American society and falls in love with an American woman, Erica.
After the 9/11 attacks, Changez increasingly feels isolated and viewed with suspicion because of his background. He also begins to question the values of American capitalism and his role in it. Over time, he becomes disillusioned and decides to leave the United States and return to Pakistan.
Back in his home country, he becomes a teacher and grows more critical of Western influence. The novel ends ambiguously during a tense conversation in Lahore between Changez and an American stranger.
