Set in 17th-century Amsterdam, the story follows Nella Oortman, a young woman who moves to the city after marrying Johannes Brandt, a wealthy merchant. However, her marriage is distant and lonely, and she struggles to adapt to her new life.
Johannes gives her a miniature replica of their house as a wedding gift. Nella begins to order small furnishings for it, but she soon receives strange items from an unknown “miniaturist” who seems to know private details about the family.
As the mysterious objects continue to appear, Nella realizes they may reflect or predict real events. She slowly uncovers dark secrets about her husband’s family, including hidden identities, forbidden relationships, and financial troubles in a strict and judgmental society.
