Jacques and his master travel together without a clear destination. To pass the time, Jacques tells stories about his love life, but his narration is often interrupted. Jacques believes that everything is already written by fate, which creates a philosophical debate about determinism and free will. The novel is made of many embedded stories and is also a reflection on storytelling itself.
